Howard DREAMS: Discovering Restructuring Expertise and Mentorship Symposium

Wednesday, November 6, 2024

On November 6th, 2024, the College, in collaboration with the ABI, presented the second annual Discovering Restructuring Expertise and Mentorship Symposium (DREAMS) program at the Howard University School of Law. The program informed students from at least five different law schools about careers in the insolvency field. It also provided scholarly analysis on cutting-edge and provocative bankruptcy issues as well as a platform for frank discussion on ways our profession can better focus on mentorship and sponsorship.  For many students, this event provided the first glimpse of our insolvency profession.

Building upon the theme of opportunity and inclusion, the event panels featured a current Howard law student or recent alumni as a facilitator.  Many College Fellows including Charlie Beckham, the College Chair, participated in the program and Professor Melissa Jacoby provided insights from her book “Unjust Debts”. Judge Michelle Harner led the thought provoking closing session on “Paying it Forward.”

While all of the panel presentations were stellar and positively received, a highlight was the interaction and discussion with the participants at breaks and during the evening reception. The students were overwhelmingly appreciative of the time spent by our professional community to listen, encourage and provide individual advice. Many of the practitioners, judges and professors in attendance also echoed the reciprocal impactful nature of the evening.  We were fortunate to also have the program offered virtually and recorded for future viewing. We look forward to our circuit facilitating similar future events.
